1. Grifola Frondosa.
Also called polyporus frondosus or cloud fungus by the populace,
and known as dancing mushroom in Japan, Grifola frondosa is a newly developed precious
edible fungus for medication. In recent years, it has been very popular on the North
American and Japanese markets. Because of its high value in nutrition and medicine, it has
attracted more and more attention.
There has been a long history of eating Grifola frondosa in the
populace. In 1709, the “Japanese Materia Medica” recorded Grifola frondosa as dancing
mushroom. The pharmacological properties were first recorded in “ Fungi Spectrum” in
Japan as “ sweet taste and mild nature with no toxin, can treat hemorrhoids. In the
early 80s, Japan and many other countries conducted a great number of systematic
researches and nearly 200 papers have been published. Bai Shouxiong et al from the
Institute of Biochemistry, Academy of Preventive Medicine, Ministry of Defense, Taiwan,
reviewed 75 papers cited by CA, and indicated that the mushroom can inhibit cancer,
promote immunity, treat hypertension, reduce blood sugar and lipid levels, and inhibit all
types of hepatitis viruses. In Japan, many research results have applied for patents.
The hymenium of Grifola frondosa is featured with crisp meat,
delicious taste, unique fragrance, reasonable nutrition composition, rich in essential
amino acids, vitamin and mineral contents. Test results reveal that 100g of the dry
product of Qingyuan Grifola frondosa contains 22.75g protein, 23.58g amino acids ( two
folds higher than the amino acid content in Lentinus edodes Sing.), vitamins C, B1,
and B2 and organic selenium. According to experts, Grifola frondosa has 6 major
medication and healthcare functions: 1. Inhibit cancer with 86.3% inhibiting rate after
oral intake; 2. Slow down aging and promote the gonad function; 3. Prevent and treat
diabetes; 4. Inhibit obesity and regulate blood pressure in a two-way fashion for the
treatment of arteriosclerosis and cerebral embolism; 5. Enhance facial beauty and moisten
the skin to postpone the appearance of age pigment; 6. Increase appetite, promote growth,
build up immunity and improve memory. As a result, it has the reputation of edible
mushrooms prince, a kind of really excellent edible fungus.
Effects of polysaccharide
The main active ingredient of
Grifola frondosa is preteoglycan, mainly in the form of dextran with basic structure of β-(1→6) andβ-(1→3) dextran, and small amount of xylose
and mannose.
Researches revealed Grifola frondosa polysaccharide plays its
anti-tumor role via enhancing cellular immunity. On the genetic level, it has powerful
inhibition of mutation caused by chemicals. It can be used in the comprehensive treatment
of lassitude, leukocytopenia, and reduced immunity due to chronic hepatitis and
radio-chemotherapy for malignant tumors. It also has certain preventive role for AIDS.
Oral intake of Grifola frondosa polysaccharide is both safe and effective.
